Guest lecturer, Leonora Miano, will be on a university tour in the United States in November. Due to the phenomenal success of her published literary works, the French Embassy in New York is sponsoring the tour of speaking engagements at American universities for Léonora Miano from November 2 – 14, 2009. Her speaking engagements are scheduled to take place at Brown University, University of Rochester, Case Western Reserve University, Furman University, and a culminating event at the Miami Book Fair, a Soiree francophone sponsored by the Cultural Services of Miami. Leonora Miano speaks English well enough to answer questions, but she feels more comfortable giving her lecture in French. Dr. Marianne Bessy, Assistant Professor in the MLL Department, will serve as interpreter. Dr Bessy, a native of France, completed her doctoral studies in the US, and therefore, speaks fluent French and English. In addition to her three novels (L’intérieur de la nuit, 2005; Contours du jour qui vient, 2006; Tels des astres éteints, 2008), a collection of short stories (Afropean Soul et d’autres nouvelles, 2008) and a short work (Soulfood équatoriale, 2008) inspired by African cuisine, she has a new novel (Les aubes écarlates) that was released August 20, 2009. Her first novel, L’intérieur de la nuit, received seven awards and the second work, Contours du jour qui vient was awarded one of France’s most distinguish prizes, Le prix Goncourt des lycéens.
