SOA-WHINSEC Panel Discussion - CLP  (1/1)
Time: Tue Nov 10 2009 07:00 PM  to  10:00 PM
Location:
University Center Burgiss Theater
Organization: International Justice Mission
Description: Foreign policy initiative or war training camp? Come hear what professors and and scholars think about the School of the Americas, located in Ft. Benning, GA. Never heard of it? Come learn what it is and the controversies that surround it.

This event will include a panel discussion of different professors representing different perspectives on the School of the Americas (SOA), aka: WHINSEC. The SOA is a school in Ft. Benning, GA that has been the subject of much controversy. Previously located in Panama, the school has been linked to major human rights' abuses such as the 1,000 person massacre in El Mozote. However, others regard the school as a crucial aspect of U.S. Foreign Policy, seeking to train and contribute to global politics. This panel will seek to provide opinions on both perspectives. It is being given in a sequence of other events which include Non-Violence Training on October 26th as well as an IJM sponsored group of students going to the SOA protest/vigil on November 20-22nd. It is important that before we, as students at Furman, create judgements, we understand different sides of something as controversial as the SOA-WHINSEC.
